Business in Ningbo, China, in Expansion Mode
December 28, 2010 in General Tags: China, Ningbo, port
Ningbo is an important port city on the central coast, whose name means ‘calm waves.’ Because of Ningbo’s special status in equal standing with provincial governments for economic administration, it is able to develop its economy in much more autonomous fashion. The port is of crucial importance to business development in Ningbo, and is second in prestige only to the great port of Shanghai. However there are advantages to the port of Ningbo over Shanghai, such as Ningbo’s ability to port deep water vessels, handling even cargo ships of 300,000 tonnes.
Development in Ningbo has been growing since the 2006 beginning of expansion of its port onto the small island of Zhoushan. The goal of this expansion is to make Ningbo even more competitive as a port of choice with the ability to handle even larger numbers of vessels of even greater capacities. Ningbo is striving to beat out Shanghai as the most important port in China.
